I first visited Gambia for two weeks holiday in 2007 and stayed at Footsteps Ecolodge which was recommended by Responsible Travel. I was very impressed with the ethos of the two owners David and Len who made sure that all their staff were well looked after throughout the year (unlike many other hotels in Gambia). They were clearly passionate about how to run a lodge that would have minimal impact on the local environment which is very important to me.
Later the same year after Footsteps had suffered from a devastating bush fire, I bought an area of land and we built Sunbird House with the help of David.
Fast forward a few years and with the help of my husband Paul the final touches were made on the house and we were ready to let it out as a holiday home.
The journey has been an interesting one and after 7 years we now have a beautiful house in a stunning part of the world. Many of the staff at Footsteps have been there since it started in 2002 and have become like a second family.
So much so Paul proposed on the Footsteps beach and we celebrated our wedding there earlier this year.
There is so much to see and do so here are our top 3 things that we enjoy when staying at Sunbird House:
1. Get up early to watch the bush come alive from the bird hide with a cup of tea and the camera.
2. Walk along the beach to Gunjur fishing village.
3. Take the dug out canoe trip along the River Allehein with Amadou - the most peaceful trip you will ever have.
